With most of us having been born into an omnivorous lifestyle, one can forgive the masses for finding the concept of veganism a little scary at first: “But what do you eat?!” … “Food.” When I first stepped into Scheckter’s Raw a little over a year ago as a newborn vegan, I was a little scared too – I mean “raw” food. What does that even mean really? A salad bar? I’m a little embarrassed to admit how ignorant I was, but we have all been there at some point whether we are willing to admit it or not.
Owner, Toby Scheckter, created Scheckter’s Raw in the spirit of giving and sharing, and this is evident from the moment you walk into the space. After returning to South Africa from New York he set about to create an eatery where the food was nutritionally uncompromised, looked beautiful, and tasted exceptional. He achieved this, and more.
I remember the first time I visited Scheckter’s and literally rolled out down Regent Road when I was done. Toby explained that this is because the food is so nutritionally dense that you don’t need a large superfood smoothie, with a main meal as well as a dessert treat! I don’t think I ate for the rest of that day.
So this morning, after a long walk on Clifton Beach, I decided to pop into Scheckter’s for some breakfast. I’ve been many times for lunch, but never for breakfast. IT. WAS. OUTSTANDING!
I ate the Organic Matcha Flapjacks (R80), high in protein and topped with strawberries, banana and a whipped cream made from coconut milk. Make sure you ask them to replace the honey with their organic agave nectar.
I also got to sample some of the Organic Oat, Almond Butter, Strawberry & Chia Seed Jar (R60) which was a far sweeter breakfast, but just as tasty and filling. Again make sure they replace the honey with agave nectar.
I tend to be a creature of habit and stick to the same food all the time which means I have my Scheckter’s “Favourites” list based on the very many times I have visited this ‘home’ of raw food:
- Thick Cut Toast w/organic peanut butter (R25)
- Curry Wrap – high in protein and not hot at all for anyone who is scared by the word “curry” (R70)
- Organic Dahl Wrap (R80)
- Raw Snickers Bar – sugar-free, dairy-free, gluten-free, raw and organic! (R55)
- Snickers Raw Organic Superfood Smoothie (R50 for 350ml or R70 for 500ml) – I couldn’t finish the large one the first time I ordered it!
I felt a bit run down this morning (after a rather late Christmas party last night), so I had an Immune Boosting Shot (R25) which was so hot it literally sent me through the roof which is exactly what I needed! Containing ginger, lemon, turmeric and cayenne pepper, it was one of the very many examples of how good nutritious food can have the most exceptional of medicinal properties.
The staff are down-to-earth, and even though the place is buzzing, there is a serenity about it – an authenticity and honesty that makes it one of the most unpretentious eateries around.
You leave feeling like you have done yourself a great big favour. Isn’t that what our relationship with food should be all about?
Thank you Toby. Long may Scheckter’s Raw continue to nourish us!
P.S. Readers have also commented that I should try the Golden Activated Nut Mylk as well as the Kashew King High Protein Raw Organic Superfood Smoothie (what a mouthful!). Okay. You’ve convinced me! #challengeaccepted
Peace x
