UPDATE: Jan 2017

Royale Eatery has just added a NEW vegan burger to their menu called the Vegan Do It.

We love them for this!

It is a 160g patty made with brown lentils & spices, topped with chilli hummus, pickled red onions and fresh coriander leaves, sprinkled with sesame seeds for R82. HELL YES! I HAVE TO TRY THIS! Thank you, Royale

Truth be told, this is not the first time I have been to Royale Eatery on Long Street to try their vegan burgers. It’s about the third time. Or fourth.

A group of us went to see an epic play at Alexander Bar Theatre and then trawled Long Street to get some post-theatre chow. There were a few options for a late night snackaroo, but this was by far my favourite. I promise to never say “snackaroo” again.

Royale is a restaurant. They serve burgers. Not just any burgers – burgers that make your soul tingle and your dreams come true. I stole that straight off their website. I am guilty of plagiarism and a lack of creativity #veganthief

My go-to HAS to be their Vegan Cheese Burger which is a 160g soya mince patty with melted vegan cheddar, caramelised onion and their homemade tomato relish all served on a vegan roll. All burgers come with a side, and I am DEMANDING you to make that side their sweet potato fries. The other options don’t even matter. Just trust me. Shhhh. Just trust. Shhh. Trust #thatwascreepy

The following burgers can be “converted” to be vegan. Think of it as a purifying ritual… wash away their omnivorous sins…

  • Veg Royale
  • Veggienostra
  • Elkington
  • Breakfast Veg
  • Googamooly
  • Yentle Express
  • Winks-Newman
  • Roasted Tofu & Veg Burger
  • Trombone

The following burger needs to be publicly shamed as it is beyond ‘veganising’ and is a lost cause to humanity:

  • Zelig – NOT vegan – avoid like the plague it is

The following burgers were sent from heaven and are vegan and virginal:

  • Vegan Cheese Burger (R84)
  • Georgia Brown (R77)
  • and the NEW Vegan Do It (R82)

REMEMBER to ask for a whole wheat or vegan roll when ordering (just to make doubly sure)

A slice of vegan cheddar will set you back R20 AND…

Royale also makes a Choc-Peppermint Vegan Shake (that has avo as a base) R42 sml, R84 lrg

A lot of their wines are vegan-friendly too:

Red Blends – Alphabetical

Pinotage – Painted Wolf and Eikendal

Merlot – Bein “Little Merlot”

Shiraz – FRAM, Arendsig

Cabernet Sauvignon – De Meye “Little River”, BIG flower, Warwick ‘The First Lady’ and Nitida

Sparkling – Krone Borealis Brut and Ambeloui Brut

all of which retail from R35-40 for a glass and R100-230 per bottle.

Royale Eatery makes bloody good burgers. When last have you been to Long Street? Come on!

Peace x

P.S. Rumour has it that Royale Eatery is flirting with the idea of making vegan pizzas too! #whattheevenheck #iknow

P.P.S. Leave a comment, share some love with me

P.P.P.S I stole photos too. Thank you to Ingrid and Alana from Instagram who don’t know me from a bar of soap. Please don’t sue me. I’m vegan. I save animals and shit.

Haha, you make me laugh – so, so good on a Monday morning :). This place sounds awesome, going to have to give it a try!

Ha ha very funny review! My face is sore from smiling! I’ve been coming here for over 10 years, way back in the day when I was ‘only’ vegetarian (cue gasp, shock, horror) and I fell madly in love with their Googamooly (it had the holy trinity for me of hummus, avo and feta) and sweet potato fries (Does anyone seriously get other types of fries here? Wierd 😉 I felt ‘normal’ and cool being able to eat out at a burger joint with my friends in Long Street (i was in my early twenties, don’t judge) and not a ‘vegetarian alien.’ I’m pleased to hear they’re still going strong! My pet grumble is the ridiculously expensive cost of adding a slice of vegan cheese to already ridiculously high food prices in CT but when the whole world is vegan, the price will come down, right? (we live in hope.)

The Georgia Brown is DELICIOUS, but when ordering any of their soya mince burgers (eg. the Fat Basted MASSIVE burger that can be swapped with a double soya mince patty much like any of their other non-vegan burgers) ask for a side of the homemade Mama’s SOB Chilli Relish.
    You will NOT be sorry!
Disclaimer: It’s as HOT as it sounds.

  4. Great review! Just wondering about cross-contamination? I don’t want my soy mince patty grilled in the same pan as the meat? I really want to support vegan options at non-vegan places but always worry about kitchens not taking requests seriously. For example Iv been served veggies cooked in butter etc before. What are your thoughts on this?

    • Hi lightlypacked. Thank you for your comment. I agree that having veggies cooked in butter is unacceptable. I usually check before sending a waiter away that this won’t happen. I have been in contact with Royale to check some of their facts but have not asked them about whether they are cooked on the same grill. I will find out and get back to you.

Hi lightlypacked! i really don’t want to put a downer on the whole ‘let’s support vegan food in non-vegan restaurants’ buzz, but as a chef (and friend) at a non-vegan restaurant once said to me: “There’s no such thing as vegetarian food in a non vegetarian restaurant.” Word. It’s just a fact that no restaurant besides a pure vegetarian or vegan restaurant is going to have 2 kitchens or 2 grills or 2 sets of pans etc.
