Review – NEW Vegan Items at Kauai

One could argue that (although few), Kauai always had vegan menu items. But they were the kind of menu items that needed to be “veganised” without any reduction in price. I am so happy to announce that Kauai has finally kept up with the worldwide vegan trend and has added two specifically vegan items to their menu. It’s a great start, and we need to show our support because as the demand grows, so will the supply. Let’s do it!

I was fortunate enough to receive a voucher from Kauai to try out the new items:

  • Plant Power Salad – lentils, avo, cashews, orange, green beans, cabbage, rocket, curried sunflower seeds, kale, greens, vegan almond butter dressing (R85)

  • Nature’s Protein Smoothie – vegan protein, hemp seeds, spirulina blend, banana, pineapple, coconut milk, pressed apple juice (350ml R47, 500ml R55)

Here’s what I thought…

The Nature’s Protein Smoothie was a treat! The pineapple, coconut milk and pressed apple juice make it sweet, balancing out the (usually overpowering) tastes of the spirulina and hemp seeds. I always battle to enjoy anything with spirulina, and this solves my problem because, as we all know #superfood.

The Plant Power Salad was perfect, only AFTER I had mixed in the vegan almond butter dressing a little more thoroughly. There are a LOT of leaves – but once sufficiently coated in the dressing, the flavours blend together beautifully. It’s SUPER healthy and definitely going to be on my list of “go-to meals”.

Overall – it’s thumbs up to both! Maybe a little pricey if you’re looking for a cheap lunch (as it totals R132 if you have the small smoothie), but delicious nevertheless. If you leave your comments below I’ll add some of them to the review – let’s get a community opinion going on this.
