Smak Deli in Bree Street is a delicatessen, patisserie, restaurant, and coffee bar in one! It can be found packed during the week at lunchtime as it’s a perfect meeting spot for all sorts! And keeping with the trend, they have added some great vegan options to the menu.

Founded by Katia Scherf, she has combined her local and global cheffing experiences to create a warm and welcoming environment for all guests. The kitchen is led by head chef, Divan Snyman, who has been a part of the Smak Deli family from its very beginning.
Their lunch menu (featuring the vegan options) is available from 11:30am-3:30pm. On my visit, my first go-to item was a fresh juice from their extensive juice menu served with eco-friendly decomposable paper straws.
Their vegan lunch portions are generous! First up was the “Vegetable Bowl“, the sweet potato being the signature taste that stood out.
The other salad option is “The Forest” – wilted spinach, smashed chilli avo, zucchini ribbons, broccoli and green beans (R88).
Their most well known vegan option is their gluten-free tacos, filled with chipotle spice, black bean puree, avocado (when available), tomato & red onion salsa, red cabbage & carrots (R110). But we warned: she is spicy!
My personal favourite, however, was their Mexican Bean Wrap (R92).
Having posted these pictures on Instagram, the general consensus from feedback that for lunchtime menu items these are rather pricey (particularly the tacos at R110). What I can vouch for is the taste and quality – although I have to agree they could do with a drop in price to make them more in line with vegan offerings at establishments.
On another note, Smak Deli also does fantastic takeaway coffees as well as some baked goods. The banana loaf is vegan!
All-in-all it’s a well-rounded reliable dining spot, and somewhere I wouldn’t mind frequenting a little more often.
