Review – Origin Coffee Roasting, De Waterkant

Origin Coffee Roasting was a regular spot for the best scrambled tofu in town. That was until they took it off their menu. I’m hoping it makes a big comeback soon – that dish was INCREDIBLE and a perfect choice for breakfast/brunch. However, all is not lost, as I was invited to try their two new additions to the menu, both of which are (obviously) vegan.

Address: 28 Hudson St, De Waterkant

Hours: 7am-5pm Mon-Fri, 8am-3pm Sat, 8am-2pm Sun

It goes without saying that Origin has exceptional coffee, and owner Joel and his team have been passionately sourcing, roasting, grinding and pouring coffee since 2006! They are also a training academy for baristas and have to date trained over 4000 that do them proud! Courses range from R75 per hour for a Cupping Session all the way up to R3800 for their 3-Day Professional Barista Course. All that info can be found here. Go check out their training academy and roastery upstairs next time you visit – it’s open to the public!

Onto the food:

Their new Tofu Rancheros (R70) is a tea-marinated tofu on smoked aubergine served with spicy tomato, guacamole and corn salsa. Fresh, healthy, wholesome and surprisingly filling it was definitely a winner. And if you’re worried that it’s too spicy – I coped. That says something.

Make sure to follow that with some coffee (of course) as well as their Vegan Peanut Butter Cookie (R22) which was the strangest (but most delicious thing) because it almost had the consistency of a crumbly macaron with a perfect combination between the saltiness of the peanut butter and the sweetness of the chocolate – both flavours working together without one trying to dominate the other.

I’d say all in all that both are winning additions to their menu.

I spied another vegan option at their takeaway counter (as you enter on the left): a Vegan BBQ Wild Mushrooms & Toasted Leek Sandwich (R60).

Damn these vegans and their plot to take over the world one sandwich at a time!

Soya milk is an additional R5 which is my only gripe and almond milk is an extra R8 – which seems to be the standard price for this addition.

Origin Coffee Roasting is a must.
