It’s not often that I have the confidence to post recipes on my blog, which is why I felt particularly challenged when the folks at Almond Creamery approached me to do a collaboration! Having recently rebranded and celebrating their “new look”, I couldn’t say no.
The brief was simple: to create a recipe using any one of the broad range of Almond Creamery products:
- Original Almond Nut Milk – as a base in smoothies, in baking (muffins & breads) or cooking (sauces & desserts)
- Almond & Macadamia Nut Milk – added to coffee or tea, as a base in smoothies, in baking (muffins & breads) or cooking (sauces & desserts)
- Almond & Macadamia Chocolate Nut Milk – as a base in smoothies, in puddings and desserts, or heated as a hot chocolate
- Almond & Macadamia Chai Spice or Coffee Nut Milk – as convenient on-the-go drinks
- Barista Blend – for the perfect coffee
Of course, the options were incredibly overwhelming, so I found myself stumped as to what sort of recipe to develop and share. I then began simply using their various kinds of nut milks in my morning smoothies as was routine. It was then that inspiration struck – vegans are obsessed with smoothies – especially as a quick on-the-go breakfast before dashing off to work. And of course – the health benefits of smoothies are numerous! The reason why I love them the most? They pack a ton of nutrients into a quick drinkable meal which suits my manic lifestyle.
I didn’t have to look far for source material as I had already been experimenting for several months as to what essentially makes a nutritiously balanced and wholesome (but tasty) breakfast smoothie when I came up with a “fail-proof” formula:
Start with a great plant-based milk base (like Almond Creamery), add a healthy fat, then your greens and veg and then any additional supplements you have lying around the house. In terms of personal preference, you can then add a sweetener of sorts.
The point is YOU CAN’T GO WRONG! And the best part? You end up using EVERYTHING you have lying around the house! That last bit of Ashwagandha powder? Throw it in! The limp spinach? Use it! The sample of breakfast cereal you got in your last Faithful to Nature delivery? Chuck that in too!
And, because of the help of the brilliant Klara Loots who designed this stunning graphic, you can download a copy to print and stick on your fridge:
Of course, you will need a good quality blender, and I personally use an OmniBlend (website) which is a “high performance” blender – the brand most smoothie or juice shops use in South Africa.
Remember: you can’t go wrong! Once you’ve got a good base of Almond Creamery Nut Milk, just experiment and get creative. Make it part of your daily routine, and if you’re OCD like me, use all of those bits and pieces from your kitchen cupboards before they expire!
