When I first became vegan, places that were offering decent breakfast options were pretty scarce. Thankfully, the majority of establishments in Cape Town have now joined the party by offering at least one vegan option. Those that give you more than one choice, however, get a serious thumbs up from me. Like Tamboers Winkel off Kloof Street in Gardens.
Address: 3 De Lorentz St, Gardens
Hours: 7am-10pm Mon-Fri, 7am-3pm Sat, 8am-2pm Sun
Since my last visit (in my pre-vegan days) it has been taken over by new management and has been given a significant facelift. The aesthetic of the space is far more appealing and functional than before, making it a great choice for escaping the madness of Cape Town (even if just for a quick coffee). You can still choose to sit by the window and observe the comings and goings on Kloof St, sit at a table inside or sit at the New York-style bar like we did.
Joint-owner, Dale Bedford, wanted to be able to offer plant-based options to make sure that everyone coming through the door felt included, so she hired the expertise of Nathalie Larsen (a vegan chef and consultant) to create some dishes that would hopefully appeal to everyone.
Bae and I decided to share the 24 Hour Bircher (R65) and the Carrot Lox on Rye (R75).
The generously portioned creamy bircher was topped with delicious fruits and berries and a dollop of nut butter.
The Carrot Lox (with their homemade cashew cream cheese) was perfectly smoked and the pickled gherkin and cucumber gave it a refreshing zing. I was thrilled to see this on the menu and it didn’t disappoint!
The food is beautifully presented and Tamboers Winkel also has GREAT coffee which they blend themselves!
Word is clearly spreading as the place was packed and people were also popping in to grab a quick takeaway coffee and pastry.
Good vibe, great food, divine coffee.
I’ve added it to my Top 5 favourites list for breakfast in Cape Town!
