One of my all-time favourite wine farm eateries, The Table at De Meye was recently taken over by new management, husband and wife team, Leigh and Brendan. I am relieved to say it has lost none of its charm and style and retained all of that delicious food and more!
ADDRESS: De Meye Wine Farm, Muldersvlei, Stellenbosch
HOURS: closed Mon-Tue, 12pm-5pm Wed-Sun
The Table at De Meye is everything that lunch on a wine farm should be: reasonably priced hearty meals prepared from farm-grown or locally sourced ingredients and wine at cellar door prices!
It was our third visit to this little gem, but the first time we sat inside and the cosiness of the log burner suited the temperamental spring weather.
The menu changes weekly depending on what is available and in season and our feast began with freshly sliced sourdough, oil and olives accompanied by a starter of asparagus with broad beans on a bed of broad bean crush.
The quality of the ingredients The Table sources will be evident from your first mouthful: an abundance of flavour and freshness without anything too fussy happening on the plate. Perfection!
A whole roasted cauliflower followed, on a bed of grains with beetroot and a side salad of greens and roasted tomatoes. The tomatoes were genuinely some of the freshest we had ever tasted. The combination of the cauliflower (cooked perfectly) and barley was wholesome, hearty and filling.
The cloud had cleared so we decided to take a breather before dessert and take a wander around the veggie garden. Any vegetable with high aspirations would struggle to find a better home than here! Well maintained, clearly loved and thriving with ingredients for weeks and months ahead!
Dessert was a creamy, smooth and simple strawberry sorbet: homemade of course!
Throughout the lunch, we got to engage with Leigh who covers the front of house duties whilst Brendan, her husband, focuses on his role as head chef in the kitchen. Hearing their story and how determined they were to be the new owners of The Table left us without any doubt that they were the rightful successors to this special Winelands gem. It’s clearly their destiny and the love and passion they have for the places radiates from them.
Put this on your bucket list. Again. And again. AND AGAIN!
Their set menu is currently priced at R395 for 3 courses.
It would be wise (essential) to book ahead!
