Wine farms have cottoned on to the fact that the world is changing and that plant-based eating is here to stay!
A new addition to the many offerings is the Vegan Picnic now available at the beautiful Boschendal Wine Farm in Franschhoek.
The farm is one of the most picturesque in the Cape Winelands, with beautifully maintained grounds and buildings and is the perfect spot to get lazy for the afternoon where you can enjoy great food and wine and of course, snooze under the shade of an oak tree (which is exactly what we did).
The picnic is a generous array of produce, sourced (as far as possible) from the farm itself or local suppliers. It includes a fresh garden salad with herb vinaigrette, millet salad with crispy chickpeas and roasted carrots, fresh crisp veggies with chive emulsion, hummus, vegan mozzarella, coronation cauliflower, pickled radish, soy-marinated mushrooms sweet onion jam, farm baked baguette and the most decadent layered chocolate mousse with strawberry coulis and chocolate vegan crumble.
The quality and flavour were outstanding and at R540 per basket for 2 people there was more than enough food to induce an afternoon nap! Drinks are extra.
Blankets and picnic backrests are provided and all you need do is show up. You have a choice of two areas in which to enjoy your picnic: The Rose Garden, which has tables to sit at if you prefer or Werf Farm which is a blankets-only picnic experience (which is what we did). The service was fantastic and there was always somebody close by to check if everything was okay or if we needed more drinks.
This is probably the best vegan picnic currently available in the Winelands and is great for families, group celebrations and couples alike.
I would highly recommend adding this to your list of things to do this summer!
