Every Stranger Has a Story: A Review of Sonder Cafe in Observatory

Nestled in the charming and quirky neighbourhood of Observatory in Cape Town, Sonder Cafe is a place where one can find reflection, connection, and introspection. Despite its humble appearance, this vegan-friendly eatery offers some of the most exquisite breakfast dishes that will impress.

Upon arrival, I was immediately drawn to the welcoming ambience of the cafe, which is unspoiled by any commercial takeover.

Bae and I decided to try their Tempeh Trap, which consisted of two crispy BBQ tempeh patties topped with tomato, fried mushrooms, avo, wilted spinach, sunflower and sesame seeds and served with a slice of sourdough. It’s now in my Top 5 breakfast list.

While the dish was exceptional, I did find the price of the oat milk latte a bit steep. It was a little on the ludicrous side at R46 (R38 plus R8 for oat milk). However, I understand the cost of quality oat milk, but I hope they consider adding soy milk at no additional cost, as many establishments have done.

Sonder offers a cosy and serene atmosphere, perfect for starting the day on the right foot. The tiny cafe specializes in New York-style toasted sandwiches, bagels, breakfast, lunch, and coffee.

Overall, our experience at Sonder was fantastic. I can confidently say that every stranger has a story, including this neighbourhood gem.
