If you’re a plant-based/vegan foodie (like me) looking for a taste of vibrant coastal Mexican cuisine in the heart of Cape Town, look no further than Hacienda on Bree Street. This modern twist on authentic Mexican dining offers a tantalizing array of vegan options that will leave your taste buds dancing with delight.
One of the highlights of dining at Hacienda is the guacamole-making demonstration right at your table. Sadly, I am allergic to avocados, but the demonstration alone is an experience that immerses you in the essence of Mexican cuisine. The Guacamole Molcajete is a vegan masterpiece, prepared with tajin powder, tomato, onion, adobo powder, lime, and coriander, served with homemade totopos (crispy tortilla chips). This appetizer is a must-try and costs R149.
Hacienda’s dedication to authenticity shines through in every dish. The Oaxaca Adobo Rice, featuring salsa verde, queso fresco, arbol red onion, and burnt pineapple, is a delightful blend of flavours that costs R129. The Black Beans, paired with guajillo cauliflower, mushroom sofrito, and chipotle powder (R139), offer a hearty and satisfying option.
For a burst of flavour, try the Guajillo Dusted Corn, accompanied by ancho honey, queso fresco, spiced aioli, and coriander, also priced at R139.
To complement your meal, don’t miss out on the Holy Berry Mocktail, a refreshing concoction of grapefruit juice, lemon, strawberry, mint syrup, and ginger ale, priced at R89. It’s the perfect drink to balance the bold flavours of Mexican cuisine.
At Hacienda, everything feels “authentic.” The food bursts with flavour, and the menu invites you to embark on a culinary adventure. Consider ordering a variety of vegan dishes to share (like I did with my dining buddy, Sam) and savour the diverse flavours of Mexican cuisine. Whether you’re dining with friends, or family, or on a special date night, Hacienda offers a destination dining experience that’s sure to impress.
The restaurant’s interior exudes a warm and inviting atmosphere, with just the right touch of dim lighting to set the mood. It’s a place that encourages connection and sharing, with impeccable service that adds to the overall experience.
